Brooke Army Medical Center: Center for the Intrepid

BioDerm Sciences Wound Care Product Line Evaluation Report

April 7, 2008

Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) serves a critical role in patient care, especially wounded service members from the war on terrorism, and in graduate medical education and research. As the Army's only certified Level 1 trauma center, BAMC receives more than 4,000 emergency room visits each month. BAMC is one of only 15 hospitals in the United States that holds both Level 1 trauma certification and accreditation from the American Burn Association. The BAMC Center for the Intrepid serves as a Triage Center for amputation and burn care for our U.S. military wounded warriors. Recognizing that BAMC Center for the Intrepid and Burn Center receive the most severe casualties from the Iraq war, it receives many of the most severe patient care challenges. With that understanding, BAMC Center for the Intrepid has utilized the BioDerm Sciences Wound Care products on a limited basis and usually as a “last resort” treatment option for forty five (45) wounded war fighters on a combined total of ninety (90) wounds and in twenty (20) post trauma surgical procedures. While the BioDerm Sciences products were used on an evaluation basis and not under the rigors of a clinical trial, the evaluation results are summarized below. In general, it can be reported that the BioDerm Sciences products were able to close sixty two percent (62%) of the wounds that in most situations had been attempted to be treated prior with two to three treatment regimens.

Center for the Intrepid Amputation Candidate Cases Evaluation:

Due to the severe war fighter casualties for which BAMC is challenged to provide wound care, the Center for the Intrepid has not previously experienced commercially available products that demonstrate the ability to close wounds that was demonstrated by the BioDerm Sciences Wound Healing Solution, Cream and Spray products on our most severe cases. BioDerm Sciences product was used as “last resort” on ten (10) war fighter’s amputation wounds. Six of these war fighter’s wounds were healed using BioDerm Sciences Wound Care Solution, Cream and Spray treatments after our standard protocol products and in most situations 2-3 back-up treatment alternatives were attempted. As an example of our experience, BioDerm Sciences closed one war fighter’s wound that had been treated but remained open for twenty two (22) months.

Center for the Intrepid Utilization Range of Experience:

During twelve (12) months of product evaluation, the range of cases where the Center for the Intrepid has evaluated BioDerm Sciences Wound Cream, Wound Spray and Wound Solution include:

  • Pressure Ulcers/Sores
  • Infected Wounds
  • Necrotizing Wounds
  • Trauma Wounds
  • Complex Soft Tissue Wounds
  • Surgical Wound dehiscence
  • Compromised Skin Grafts
  • Shrapnel and fragment wounds
  • Post Amputation Wounds
  • Flaps, superficial, partial and healing full thickness burns

Center for the Intrepid Aggregate Results with BioDerm Sciences Product Line:

The Center for the Intrepid twelve (12) month evaluation led to compelling case experiences several assured cases of war fighters being able to have wounds healed that despite multiple standard and advanced wound care regimens failing prior were healed with BioDerm Sciences Wound Care utilization.

The Center for the Intrepid evaluation utilizing the BioDerm Sciences products, in the majority of cases, experienced acceleration of the rate of wound healing closures, reduction in scarring especially when comparing scarring to comparable scarring experience with many of the same patients on previously closed wounds, greater elasticity and mobility of wound site, especially in post amputation treatment cases.
