Case Study of Open Sternal Wound and Use of BioDerm Sciences Wound Care Products

PURPOSE:

The successful result of using BioDerm Sciences Wound Solution and Wound Dressing on a 75-year-old male who had a post-surgical sternal wound that would not heal after over 5 months of treatment.

SUMMARY:

Patient is a 75 year old male who had coronary artery bypass surgery in mid-November 2006. Approximately 48 hours later patient presented to a hospital Emergency Room with dyspnea and shock requiring intubation and mechanical ventilation. Patient tested positive for Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus. Patient was taken to surgery, debrided and left with open sternum wound for approximately one week. Patient underwent repair of sternum with a plate and muscle flap. Patient demonstrated gradual improvement while treated with Intravenous Vancomycin. Patient was placed under sedation and treated with paralytic agents and underwent a tracheotomy. . As a secondary result of the infection the patient developed mild renal failure requiring hemodialysis. The patient was transferred to a Long-term Acute Care hospital for further treatment of the sternal wound and renal failure in early December 2006.

CONCLUSION:

A 75 year old male with a sternal wound that would not heal was treated with BioDerm Science Wound Solution and Dressing. Top of the wound closed within 72 hours and the bottom of the wound improved significantly during the initial course of therapy. The pictures below show the wound before and after the use of BioDerm Sciences Products. It is apparent that these products have re-started the wound healing process in an individual whose wound had been unresponsive to other forms of treatment.
